Laken Nix is a delightful woman that I’ve had the honor of connecting with through the online world. She has a gorgeous blog that’s filled with her writing and glimpses of her life as a newlywed in the deep south. I love the way she describes her blog: “I like that this space is purposefully unspecific. I want to document everything, all of the comings and goings of life. And I’m sure those will change over time, as we all do. But mostly, I want this to remain a space to talk about the little things in life because often, they turn out to be the big things.” You know I’m a big proponent of eating whole, seasonal, local foods whenever possible and I’m also a huge fan of meal planning so when Laken posted a this project, I just had to share. “For a while now, I’ve been looking for the perfect meal planner. And for a while now, I’ve come up short. I’ve used notecards, I’ve used a dry-erase calendar on the fridge, I’ve used iCalendars and online planners and Evernote. While all of them served their purpose, I never truly stuck with any of them. I’m a [...]

Hi there! I’m short on time today but wanted to share a few links that I’ve been loving from around the web this week before I head out the door… This kale salad from Dinner: A Love Story will definitely be making an appearance in my kitchen soon. Beets, oranges & feta…sound like a perfect summer side dish to me. I can’t be the only one who never really knows what items cannot be composted or recycled. This article from Apartment Therapy shares 30 items to avoid. Super helpful. If you’re pinching pennies this article may be helpful: Cheap, Healthy Foods That Fill You Up. You all know I love Sprouted Kitchen. Once I can have poached eggs again I’ll be giving this recipe for Bean Bowls with Poached Eggs a try. Yum. If you’re still using the excuse that you eat fast food because it’s cheaper PLEASE check out this info-graphic from Mark Bittman and The New York Times. No more excuses :) Have a great weekend everyone. I’ll see you back here next week! xo,

I’m thrilled to be guest posting on Robin’s blog today. Our paths crossed when she featured my good friend and dietitian colleague, Corinne Dobbas, in a recent “Real Women” column. Seeing that both Robin and I live in the Denver metro area, and appreciate similar food philosophies, I knew we had to connect. As a registered dietitian, it’s my responsibility to stay on top of the latest nutrition-related science. And it’s also my responsibility to understand all of the “diets” out there to help guide those who want to follow them or simply have questions. I’ve even lived as if I had diabetes for a week, including three-times daily blood sugar testing via finger prick, to better understand where my clients are coming from. Most recently, I embarked on a gluten-free diet for a month and have even experimented with Paleo to get a sense for how my body feels when I eliminate certain foods. With the prevalence of “free” diets these days (you know, gluten-free, dairy free, nut free, egg free, grain free, etc.), I felt this was an important part of my role as a practitioner. At the end of the day though, it’s my perspective as a [...]

Organization and preparation are 2 key elements in achieving a balanced life. When I coach my clients online, I place a huge emphasis on the importance of prepping for the week ahead (planning workouts, grocery shopping, batch cooking, etc.). “Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.” – John Wooden That is why I LOVE the concept behind Hey SugarSNAP’s products. First, I have to brag. I was lucky enough to train one of the founders, Tarah Evans, while living in the bay area. I say “lucky enough” because Tarah is a gem. She is one of a kind. She’s caring, passionate, thoughtful, driven and hilarious. Just writing this makes me miss our Tuesday/Thursday sessions together! Tarah and her friend, Stacy, co-founded the Hey SugarSNAP while they were both new mothers of twins trying to keep it all together. You can read their serendipitous story here. They currently have 2 brilliant products on the market: The SugarSNAP Files and The Car-Go System. The SugarSNAP Files are made to fit easily inside your diaper bag to prevent it from becoming a big black hole. There are 5 zippered pouches with helpful labels so you know right where to go when baby is [...]

Well, I can’t believe it but the time has come! I will be taking the next few weeks off in anticipation of this Balanced Life baby making his/her entrance into the world. Over the next few months I’ll be popping in with posts and updates as I find the time, energy and urge, but I also have a bunch of fantastic guest posts and scheduled posts lined up for you, so be sure to stick around. I’m very excited about these guest posts. Some are from experts in the area of health/nutrition/Pilates while some are stories from real women about what balance means in their current season of life. I want The Balanced Life to be a place where women are comfortable to share their health & wellness stories…the good, the bad and the ugly. I want it to be a place where women feel safe to keep it real learn from one another. I think you will enjoy the upcoming posts. Stay tuned for baby news coming soon (hopefully)! xo, PS – don’t forget you can still train with me while I’m away on leave!
Since moving to Colorado I’ve had the pleasure of teaching prenatal Pilates classes at Belly Up Spa in Lone Tree. It has been such a joy and I’m genuinely sad to leave our group of soon-to-be-mamas as I prepare for maternity leave. I taught mat Pilates classes in their beautiful studio up until I was 37 weeks pregnant. That is a BIG belly doing Pilates! But it’s so great for you during pregnancy that even on the days I felt lethargic and tired I left class feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. I had a great group of mamas in my class and it was fun to swap pregnancy stories and discuss all of the changes and decisions that come along with motherhood. I spent most of my time at Belly Up teaching and only recently indulged in one of their spa treatments myself; a relaxing, hour long, non-toxic pedicure. They offer a full range of services from body treatments, to massages, to waxing and even 3D ultrasounds. The atmosphere is chic & relaxing and I can’t wait to get a prenatal massage before this baby arrives. Things I love about Belly Up: - It’s CLEAN. This is huge for me.
I met the lovely Moriah through The Influence Network and have loved getting to know her through her lovely blog. She recently shared her review of the Balanced Beginnings program from the perspective of a mom with a new little one. Which I love. This program can be used by anyone! Pregnant or not. And it’s great to know that you can still use the videos in the future when you find yourself expecting a new little bundle of joy in the future. Here’s an excerpt from Moriah’s post… “I have been working out some, but especially during times like this winter when it’s hard to get outside, these are great for when Gracie is napping. The stretches are wonderful and the strengthening routine definitely lets me feel my muscles working, but isn’t exhausting. I really wish I had had these after Gracie was first born! Someday after other future babies are born, I am totally using these moves to help me ease back into working out. Even now though, they currently work as a nice supplement to my other workouts. Robin provides clear and easily understood instructions and let’s new moms know that it’s ok to be feeling a [...]
